These aren't just big dunes. They're some of the oldest and tallest on earth, and they're the colour of rust.

Iron oxide gives the Namib its deep orange; the older the sand, the redder it gets. At Deadvlei, a white clay pan is studded with 900-year-old camelthorn trees that never rotted — it's too dry to decay.

Climb Big Daddy at dawn and the shadow line splits the dune in two. There's nowhere that looks like this, and the silence is the part photos can't carry.
